Learning Disability Workshops

In 2014 East Kent Hospitals Clinical Education was awarded funding by Health Education Kent Surrey Sussex to deliver workshops to support local healthcare professionals to provide person centered, safe and effective care for people with learning disabilities.

A partnership with Kent and Medway Learning Disability Community of Practice was established and some local experts by experience along with local people and organisations to shape the workshops.

The outcomes identified were:-

  • In-depth understanding of Learning Disabilities
  • Service User’s personal perspective
  • Interactive and Scenario based sessions
  • Legal Duties of Healthcare Professionals
  • Leadership and Service Improvement opportunities

The workshops use facilitated activity to engage participants in what adjusted, person centred care might mean for people with learning disabilities. Including many opportunities for reflection on practice, context and evidence with the intention of participants to identify adjustments that they might make as a result of attending the workshop.

While most of the workshop is group generated, the evidence/presentation can be found here.

The Learning Disability Workshop conference is scheduled for 14th April in Canterbury. This will draw together the themes and outcomes of the past 12 months work.  Workshop Conf flyer 2016To book places contact sarah.mcgilley@nhs.net
